Gallup, New Mexico
Gallup (Navajo: Nanizhoozhi) is a city located in McKinley County, New Mexico. Gallup lies on Interstate 40, 139 miles west of Albuquerque and 25 miles east of the Arizona border. The city is the tour hub for the popular Four Corners Region, and it is the mercantile, transportation and banking center for the entire region. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,209. Gallup residents are known as Gallupians. Gallup is sometimes called the “Indian Capital of the World”, for its location in the heart of Native American lands, and presence of Navajo, Zuni, Hopi and other tribes. Route 66 runs through Gallup and the town’s name is mentioned in the lyrics to the song, Route 66.
Gallup is also the host to the “Annual Red Rock Balloon Rally” – the second largest hot air balloon event in the world- during the first week in December.
Gallup also hosts the annual Inter Tribal Ceremonial, perhaps the largest Native American gathering in the country, held early in August at Red Rock Park eight miles east of Gallup, culminating in a Saturday parade that brings some 30,000 people out to line old Route 66 through town.
Services Provided
NATIONAL FARMWORKERS JOBS PROGRAM (NFJP): Qualified farmworkers receive job training and/or classroom training to increase their basic skills or work skills in order to obtain unsubsidized employment.
COMMUNITY SERVICES BLOCK GRANT (CSBG): Provide work readiness training along with supportive services with the goal of helping people reach a higher level of self-sufficiency. CSBG funds are also utilized to help individual/families who need emergency services.
WORKFORCE INVESTMENT ACT (WIA) Youth: HELP-NM’s youth program goals are to improve educational achievement, job readiness and employment opportunities for youth 14-21 years old.
