Agriculture has always been a very important sector of the Guadalupe County economy with the most substantial impact coming from the expansive cattle ranching operations in the region. Ranching and livestock comprises the largest majority (approximately 98%; 93.5% cattle, 3% sheep 1% other livestock) of cash receipts from agriculture in Guadalupe County with 44,000 head population projected for 1995. This comprises about three percent of the total number of cattle in the state. The county also has approximately five percent of the states sheep and lamb population with between 14,000 and 15,000 head. The total value of these sheep is between $900,000 and $1,000,000. Historically, the Pecos River Valley has supported a wide range of crop production. Farmers in the Puerto de Luna area continue to produce a small amount of green chile as a cash crop, with much of the other farming in the area being committed to alfalfa hay production. All told receipts from non- livestock related farming makes up less than two percent of all agricultural receipts.
