Albuquerque the Magazine:
With a staff of 220 and 35 offices statewide, HELP-NM, Inc.
has provided services for more than 800,000 individuals since
their inception in 1965. As a faith-based community
organization which works to strengthen families through
home-based educational programs and initiatives, they serve
members in the community from the youngest to the elderly.
In fact, the organization and its spin-off organizations have
a combined net effect of $80 million in combined budgets,
according to John Martinez, executive director.
HELP-NM, Inc. programs include low-income energy assistance,
Individual Development Accounts (IDA) that promote financial
literacy, a food program, and sponsorship of the Gordon
Bernell Charter School, which offers high school education at
the Bernalillo County Detention Center (among other
sponorships). HELP-NM, Inc. is also the largest funded
agency for Head Start and pre-kindergarten programs in the
state. "We're the largest provider in the state for
workforce training and placement for adults and youth,"
Martinez says. He adds that the agency also offers
assistance to smaller non-profits across the state including
one group that's planning to provide transitional housing for
formerly incarcerated individuals, and another that's
providing information and training on recognized victims of
human trafficking.
"We truly are our brothers' and
sisters' keeper", Martinez says. "HELP-NM has active
leadership and a strategic belief we are 'moving the mountain'
in our state and our clients are moving their own mountains in
their own life with our support. 265-3717,
